Why MSPs Must Own the Entire Data Lifecycle in the Age of AI

data storage

Every AI strategy runs into the same wall eventually: the data. Not the model, not the GPU budget, not even the vendor selection. The data. Most organisations still have their most valuable information scattered across file shares, sitting in isolated storage silos, or parked on primary storage that costs a fortune to keep spinning. That is not a small inconvenience. It is the reason so many AI initiatives stall before they ever produce a usable result.

At MSP GLOBAL 2026 this October, a panel of European technology leaders and a practicing MSP will tackle this problem head-on in a session titled From Storage to Knowledge: Why MSPs Must Own the Entire Data Lifecycle in the Age of AI.” The premise is easy to put into words but hard to execute: intelligence, artificial or otherwise, is only as good as the data feeding it. If that data is trapped, ungoverned, or too expensive to access, every downstream AI project will suffer.

Following one dataset from storage to insight

Rather than deal in abstractions, this panel is a case study that follows a single dataset through its entire lifecycle: from the moment it lands on storage, through classification and governance, to the point where it becomes usable knowledge for an AI application.  fixate on the model layer, our expert panelists will start where the real bottleneck actually happens: in storage architecture, data hygiene, and access control, and then will explore how to get to the AI outcomes everyone wants.

This panel also goes beyond the technical stack. As European regulation tightens, from GDPR enforcement to the EU AI Act, and as customers grow more sensitive to where their data physically lives and who can access it, digital sovereignty has evolved from a compliance checkbox to a buying criterion. Customers are actively looking for local, trusted partners who can guarantee security and control without outsourcing that control to a handful of hyperscale providers. That shift plays directly into the hands of MSPs willing to build the right capabilities.

The people in the room

The session brings together experienced executives who represent different pieces of this puzzle. Patricia Hillebrand, Technical Alliances Manager at Pyramid Computer, and Sebastian Klee, CMO at PoINT Software & Systems, bring perspectives from the storage and data management side, where the sovereignty conversation started well before AI made it urgent. Levent Akyil, CEO and CTO of co-mind AI, has spent recent months building and demonstrating self-hosted, sovereign AI platforms designed to keep sensitive data inside a customer’s own infrastructure. Jürgen Weiss adds the operational lens of an organisation running these projects for real customers, not just pitching them. David Axler, representing Cloudian, brings the object storage and cyber resilience angle, an increasingly important piece as ransomware and data recovery scenarios collide with AI readiness. Soeren von Varchmin, Chief Evangelist at MSP GLOBAL, moderates a conversation that will help MSP leaders connect all of these dots into something you can actually act on.

Why this is so important for the channel

For MSPs, this session is not another product showcase disguised as a panel. It is an argument for a business model shift. MSPs that limit themselves to selling infrastructure are competing on price against companies with much deeper pockets. MSPs that position themselves as data lifecycle and AI partners are selling something much harder to commoditise: trust, context, and continuity of service across the entire path from raw storage to AI-ready knowledge.

That is also where the recurring revenue lives. Storage is a line item; while data governance, AI enablement, and ongoing compliance support are relationships. European MSPs are particularly well positioned here, given the growing preference among European customers for providers who understand local regulation and can keep data in-region without sacrificing capability.

If you are attending MSP GLOBAL 2026, put this one on your schedule. Whether your business is currently selling storage, backup, security, or AI services, the panel’s core message applies: the real opportunity is not any single layer of the stack. It is owning the full journey from storage to knowledge, and helping your customers regain control over their data, their AI, and ultimately their digital future.
